In early 2017,
Nick was in the audience at C(ovell), an immersive show staged in a secret back room of a wine bar. Katelyn was in the cast as The Tiger, a ferocious beast in a cage. Although the entire show was wonderfully compelling, Nick found his eyes drifting over to the corner to see what the Tiger was doing… and every time he looked, she was staring murderously right back at him.
Despite having almost no lines—or perhaps because of it!—her performance that night was absolutely electrifying.
Later that year,
when Katelyn auditioned for Safehouse ‘77, Nick remembered their staring contest, and so did Katelyn. Katelyn went on to play Sonya, the mysterious spy inspired by Stevie Nicks, for all three runs of Safehouse ‘77. Between runs, she and Nick collaborated once again as performer and writer, this time for CoAct Productions’ The Sideshow. And somewhere in there, Nick learned Katelyn’s secret. She wasn’t just an incredible actor… she was also an award-winning playwright.
We became awesome friends and found that our creative voices complemented one another. So, in early 2019, we started talking about a different sort of collaboration… a show that we’d write and direct together. Totally different than anything we’d done so far.
This became The Pod…
Our short-form sci-fi experience created for the Hollywood Fringe Festival, which won the Speakeasy Society’s Golden Key Award and Immersion Nation’s Best Single Guest Immersive, and was nominated for Best Immersive for Hollywood Fringe 2019 and Most Innovative Immersive for Immersion Nation.
It was simply a magical experience, and we wanted to keep the magic going, so Katelyn officially joined Spy Brunch as Co-Artistic Director.
We draw on our creative partnership to produce some of the best immersive out there, and to support and inspire other artists through mentorship and consulting. We are consistently blown away by our fellow industry artists and promote an inclusive immersive theatre community, utilizing storytelling techniques to reach the hearts of untapped audiences hungry for the next level of “hands on” entertainment.
